This is exactly what Mercedes did with the F-Cell Roadster concept in 2009. This concept is a throwback to the Benz Motorwagen from the 1880s, featuring the iconic bicycle wheels and replacing the steering wheel with a joystick reminiscent of the lever that was used to steer the original.
