The very first petrol-driven automobile was built in 1883 by 27-year old Edouard Delamare-Deboutteville as an alternative to horse transport for his father’s cotton mill with the help of the father’s mechanic Charles Malandin. It used an 8HP gas engine modified to run on petrol and mounted onto a 4-wheel hunting-brake.
